XML Sitemap Validator

Validate an XML sitemap for structure issues, listed URL problems, and common indexing blockers.

Enter a public sitemap URL to validate XML structure and sample listed pages.

Sitemap Spec Cheatsheet

A URL sitemap uses a <urlset> root with one or more <url><loc>…</loc> entries. A sitemap index uses <sitemapindex> to point at child sitemaps.

Common practical limits are about 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed per sitemap file. Prefer absolute http(s) URLs and accurate <lastmod> values when you have them.

Reference your sitemap from robots.txt and submit it in Search Console. Spec details can evolve — treat size/URL caps as widely used guidelines, not a substitute for the current sitemaps.org protocol docs.

How It Works

Step 1

Enter a public sitemap URL

Paste a sitemap.xml or sitemap index URL. We fetch it safely with SSRF protections.

Step 2

Review structure checks

See whether the document looks like a urlset or sitemap index and how many loc entries were found.

Step 3

Inspect sampled URLs

A small sample of listed URLs is probed for accessibility. This is not a full site crawl.

Use Cases

Launch QA

Confirm a new sitemap is reachable and structured before Search Console submission.

Coverage debugging

Spot empty sitemaps, invalid loc values, or sampled URLs returning errors.

Index maintenance

Recheck sitemap indexes after migrations or large content moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this crawl every URL in the sitemap?

No. It validates the sitemap document and probes a small sample of listed URLs for accessibility.

Can it fetch private or local sitemaps?

No. Only public http/https URLs are allowed for security reasons.

Are 50,000 URL / 50MB limits hard rules?

They are widely used protocol guidelines. Prefer splitting large sitemaps into an index when you approach those sizes.
